Thailand: Bangkok roads to close for coronation rehearsal April 17

Authorities will close around 40 roads in Bangkok on Wednesday, April 17, for a coronation ceremony rehearsal. A heightened security presence and significant transportation disruptions are expected in the area during the rehearsal. Residual traffic delays and congestion are likely in the hours following the event.

Context

Maha Vajiralongkorm, better known as King Rama X, will hold a coronation ceremony on May 4 with related festivities and events being held on May 5-6. This will be the first coronation ceremony held in Thailand since 1950. King Bhumibol, the father of Rama X, reigned from 1950 until his death in 2016 and was well regarded in Thailand.
