Iraq: IS militants kill two security personnel in Al-Qayyarah Feb. 19

Islamic State (IS) militants kill two security personnel in Al-Qayyarah subdistrict (Nineveh province) February 19; similar attacks on security checkpoints possible over the near term

Informational

Event

Islamic State (IS) militants killed two security personnel in an attack on a security checkpoint in Al-Qayyarah subdistrict (Nineveh province) on Tuesday, February 19. Security forces reportedly killed four militants in the clash before the others fled the area. Similar IS attacks targeting security personnel are possible in northern Iraq over the near term.

Context

While former Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi claimed victory over IS in December 2017, the group retains a degree of freedom of movement in parts of the country, particularly in western and northern Iraq. High-profile attacks often prompt equally significant security responses, including enhanced checkpoint operations, and more proactive operations, with resulting effects on transit.

Advice

Individuals in Nineveh province are advised to report suspicious objects and behavior to the police, remain vigilant for militant activity, and adhere to any instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

The security environment in Iraq remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas with proper security protocols in place, other areas should be considered strictly off limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to all travel.
