Mali: Two UN peacekeepers killed in Mopti region January 25

Event

A United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) convoy hit a mine or improvised explosive device (IED) near Douentza (Mopti region) on the morning (local time) of Friday, January 25. According to UN officials, at least two Sri Lankan peacekeepers were killed in the blast. Further such attacks are possible in the coming days and weeks.

Context

Due to the presence of various armed groups, Mali's northern and central regions remain unstable despite the presence of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), one of the largest UN peacekeeping missions in the world. Since 2013, 170 peacekeepers have been killed in Mali.
