Australia: Power outages in the South January 25

Event

On Friday, January 25, authorities announced that at least 200,000 people were experiencing power blackouts in the southern part of the country after forced outages were ordered to reduce the risk of the entire grid failing. Meanwhile, temperatures remain high across this southern region. In Melbourne temperatures reached 43° C (110° F) around noon (local time). In other areas of Victoria state, fire warnings were issued, with hundreds of emergency services personnel dispatched, as temperatures reach up to 47° C (116° F).

Context

South Australia is currently affected by an extreme heatwave ongoing since January 21. On January 24 temperatures in Adelaide reached 48° C (118° F), breaking a record that had stood since the late 1930s.

Individuals in Australia are advised to follow local weather reports, stay well-hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day and avoid alcohol), and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from noon to 16:00).
