Uganda: Liberation Day celebrations January 26

Main Liberation Day celebrations to be held in Tororo district January 26; authorities increase security along the border with Kenya in preparation

Events commemorating the 33rd anniversary of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) coming to power will be held on Saturday, January 26. The main Liberation Day event will be held at the Muwafu Primary School in Tororo district. President Yoweri Museveni will preside over the celebration, which will include a parade and medal ceremony. Associated events are also expected throughout the country. Heightened security measures have been put in place along the border with Kenya, including in Busia and Malaba. An increased security presence is also anticipated throughout the country during the celebrations.

Context

Liberation Day is an annual celebration that marks the NRM taking power from Tito Okello Lutwa’s military government. Museveni led the NRM during the war and named himself president after removing Lutwa.
