Chile: Widespread power outages following Jan. 19 Coquimbo earthquake /update 1

Event

Two people are dead and approximately 200,000 are without power following a 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit north-central Chile's Coquimbo region in the late evening (local time) of Saturday, January 19. The two deaths were caused by heart attacks and attributed to the earthquake. There were no reports of significant infrastructure damage, though some landslides were reported in the area. Road damage and closures cannot be ruled out. Four aftershocks with magnitudes of at least 4.0 were recorded as of 12:00 on Sunday, January 20; further aftershocks are likely in the coming hours.

Context

Saturday's earthquake hit 15 km (9 mi) south of Coquimbo (Coquimbo region) at approximately 20:32.

Individuals in Chile, particularly near Coquimbo, are advised to monitor the situation, be prepared for further aftershocks, anticipate power, telecommunication, and transportation disruptions, including road closures, and adhere to any instructions issued by local authorities.

During an earthquake, individuals are advised to protect themselves as much as possible from falling debris if indoors (e.g. under a table), to move away from windows and exterior walls, and to not attempt to leave the building unless there is an immediate danger. If outdoors, move away from any tall structures, such as buildings, utility wires, and streetlights.
