Indonesia: Emergency period extended in tsunami-affected area

Event

On January 8, authorities have extended through January 19 the emergency period in areas affected by Sunda Strait tsunami on December 22. This extension allows authorities and emergency personnels to provide more effective measures on dealing with those affected. According to the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB), around 7000 people were displaced in South Lampung regency following the tsunami.

Context

A 1 m (3 ft) surge of water hit the Sunda Strait on Saturday, December 22. Officials believe that the wave was caused by an undersea landslide following an eruption at the Krakatoa volcano. The tsunami killed 431 people, injured 7200 others, and displaced over 46,640 people in the Banten province's coastline and the South Lampung regency.
