Supporters of the ruling Union for the Republic (UPR) party have called for a demonstration to take place in the capital city of Nouakchott on Wednesday, January 9. The march, which will be led by President Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz has been organized to call for national unity amid ongoing tensions with opposition groups, including the anti-slavery Initiative for the Resurgence of the Abolitionist Movement (IRA). The march will end at a square near the city former's airport where the president is expected to address the crowd. An increased security presence and related traffic disruptions are likely; associated violence cannot be ruled out.
