Police clash with protesters in some areas of Abidjan on January 7; roads and ferry services blocked in some areas

A political demonstration broke out in the Abobo-Doumé area of Abidjan on Monday, January 7. Hundreds of people gathered in the area to demand that newly elected mayor of Plateau commune, Jacques Ehouo, be allowed to take office. Protesters erected barricades along roads and blocked ferry terminals connecting Abobo-Doumé to Plateau. Police officers reportedly used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators. Further protests are possible in the coming hours and days; clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.
Context
Ehouo was elected mayor of Plateau commune during elections in October 2018. His inauguration has been postponed due to a corruption court case that has been filed against him.
