In the Indian capital, New Delhi, air quality remains "very unhealthy" as of January 7

Warning

Event

As of Monday, January 7, air quality continue to be "very unhealthy" in the capital New Delhi, despite some rainfall in the capital the day prior, which briefly improved the air quality. According to the Central Pollution Control Board, the measure of tiny, hazardous breathable particles known as PM 2.5 (particles smaller than 2.5 microns in diameter) has exceeded 180 by noon (local time) - its lowest level for two months. However, this level remains five times higher than a United States government-recommended level of 35.

Context

New Delhi is notoriously one of the world's most polluted cities. Levels of PM 2.5 hit their highest last year at 450 on Dec 23.

Advice

Individuals in the Delhi region are advised to monitor updates to the air quality index and avoid outdoor activities. Children and those with chronic respiratory illnesses should exercise additional caution. Do not hesitate to seek medical attention if experiencing breathing difficulties or other health concerns.
