The United States Geological Survey observed an underwater earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on the Richter scale roughly 151 km (94 mi) west-northwest of Tobelo (North Maluku province) at 01:27 (local time) on Monday, January 7. The earthquake was recorded at a depth of 60 km (37 mi) and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has not issued a tsunami alert as of 01:33. Aftershocks are possible in the coming hours and days.
