US: Blizzard warning issued for Albuquerque (New Mexico) December 28-29

The US National Weather Service (NWS) issued blizzard and winter storm warnings for much of the state of New Mexico on Friday, December 28, as snow and strong winds are expected to persist in the area until Saturday, December 29. A blizzard warning is in effect until 06:00 (local time) on Saturday for Albuquerque and the surrounding areas. Estimated snowfall totals range from 7.5-15 cm (3-6 in) in northwest New Mexico to 10-20 cm (4-8 in) in central New Mexico to 25-38 cm (10-15 in) in south-central and east-central areas of the state. Strong winds of 65-80 km/h (40-50 mph) through mountain gaps are forecast to result in blowing snow, significantly reducing visibility, and wind chills down to -26°C (-15°F). Areas between Santa Fe and Albuquerque will likely experience the worst of the storm. Transportation disruptions are likely, including flight delays at Albuquerque International Sunport (ABQ) and dangerous driving conditions, especially along I-25 and I-40. Power disruptions are also possible in affected areas.
