Somalia: VBIED targets security checkpoint in Mogadishu, wounding one Dec. 21

Event

A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) targeted a security checkpoint at Dabka junction (Makka Al-Mukarama Street) in Mogadishu on the night (local time) of Friday, December 21, leaving one person lightly wounded. Police have reportedly cordoned off the incident area; the suspect fled the scene following the attack. A heightened security presence and localized traffic disruptions are to be expected near the site over the coming hours.

Context

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident but Al-Shabaab regularly carries out similar attacks and is suspected of being responsible for Friday's attack. Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent across the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.
