Greece: Nationwide taxi driver strike November 8 /update 1

Nationwide taxi drivers strike on November 8; protests expected to take place in Athens

Warning

Event

Taxi drivers across Greece are expected to stage a strike from 04:00 to 16:00 (local time) on Thursday, November 8, to protest a defamation lawsuit filed by the ridesharing app Beat, against the head of the Greek taxi drivers' union, Thymios Lymberpoulos. The strike is also intended to protest a fall in demand for taxis due to the growing popularity of ridesharing services and the government's failure to implement appropriate regulations to protect the business of taxi drivers. A related gathering is scheduled in Athens at 09:00 (local time) on Thursday outside the Evelpidon Court. Further associated protests in the coming days cannot be ruled out.

Advice

Individuals in Greece should monitor developments and avoid any related demonstrations.
