Madagascar: Tropical Cyclone Alcide forms off northeast coast

Tropical Cyclone Alcide formed on Tuesday, November 6, off the northeast coast of Madagascar, launching the 2018-2019 southwest Indian Ocean tropical cyclone season. Alcide is currently located 764 km (475 mi) east-northeast of Antisiranana and producing sustained winds of 139 km/h (86 mph), the equivalent of a Category 1 hurricane. The storm is predicted to continue its path southwest until Friday, November 9, when it is forecast to stall and weaken due east of Antisiranana. Changes to its path are possible in the coming days and Alcide may move across the northern edge of Madagascar. Rain, strong winds, rip currents, and high surf are possible at large distances from the storm, including the northern Madagascar coast and nearby islands, such as Mauritius and Réunion.
