Nigeria: Cholera outbreak ongoing in Yobe state late October /update 3

Event

The number of cholera cases in Yobe state continues to rise amid an ongoing outbreak as of late October, with the total number of suspected cases rising from 1319 as of October 1 to 1710 as of October 28. Reported cases are largely concentrated in the Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Gulani, Gujba, and Damaturu. While the number of cases has increased, no additional fatalities have been reported in the past month (61 total deaths reported in the current outbreak).

Context

Cholera is typically spread via infected water supplies. It induces acute diarrhea leading to severe dehydration, frequently resulting in death. The risk of death is highest among people with compromised immune systems, such as malnourished children or those living with HIV. However, even among healthy adults, cholera can be fatal within a matter of hours.

Advice

To reduce the risk of contracting cholera, wash hands regularly, drink only bottled or purified water, and avoid eating raw or undercooked foods. Individuals who believe they may have contracted cholera should seek immediate medical attention.
