South Korea: Taxi strikes and protests October 18

Event

Ten of thousands of taxi drivers are expected to strike on Thursday, October 18, in protest against app-based ride sharing services. The strike will be observed in the capital Seoul, the city of Incheon, and Gyeonggi province from 04:00 (local time) and for a duration of 24 hours. A related rally will be held in downtown Seoul at Gwanghwamun Square from 14:00. A second protest is also expected in the vicinity of Cheong Wa Dae. Associated traffic disruptions are likely. Local authorities have announced that subway and bus services will have increased services on the day to minimize inconveniences.

Context

This is the third social action by taxi associations in October. Taxi drivers are attempting to prevent the launch of a new ride sharing app.
