Nationwide general strike in Uruguay August 22; heath and transportation sector disruptions expected

The PIT-CNT union has called for a general strike to take place on Wednesday, August 22. Workers from various sectors are represented by the umbrella union are expected to take part, including health and transportation sector employees. Limited services in hospitals and other healthcare facilities are to be expected and doctor’s appointments may be canceled; however, emergency rooms will remain open and urgent care will remain available. Public transportation will also be affected - potentially fully suspended - beginning at 19:00 (local time) on August 21, notably in the capital Montevideo. Increased demand for taxis and increased road congestion is likely.

Associated protests are possible, particularly in Montevideo.
