Event

Suspected Boko Haram militants attacked and pillaged the village of Mailari, located in the northeastern state of Borno, on the night of Saturday, August 18 (local time). The militants reportedly used rocket-propelled grenades and firearms in the attack. Between six and 19 people were killed in the two-hour-long incident, according to differing sources. 

Context

The northeastern region of Nigeria is highly susceptible to attacks by Boko Haram. While Nigerian military forces have pushed insurgents from much of their previously claimed territory over the past year, attacks by the group have been on the rise since June 2017.
