US: Death toll rises from Carr Fire (northern California) August 4 /update 4

The death toll from the so-called Carr Fire near Redding in northern California increased to seven on Saturday, August 4. According to a spokesman for PG&E Corporation, a power linesman was killed by the fire while working in the area. No further details were reported.

The Carr Fire has burned approximately 58,700 hectares (145,000 acres) and is 41 percent contained as of 19:00 (local time) on Saturday, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire). At least 1229 homes have been destroyed, along with hundreds of other buildings. The fire forced thousands of residents in Shasta and Trinity counties to evacuate. Redding is forecast to experience extreme temperatures beginning on Monday, August 6, with highs staying above 38°C (100°F) and up to 42°C (107°F) until Monday, August 13. According to the National Weather Service, Redding has had 71 days without rain and has seen 33 days this year with temperatures above 38°C (100°F). The hot and dry conditions, combined with high wind gusts seen in recent days, have contributed to the size and intensity of this conflagration and will continue to hamper efforts to stop the blaze.

Context

The fire ignited on July 23 after a vehicle malfunctioned near the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. Wildfires are frequent in California from May through November.
