Nepal: Flooding kills at least 159 people in July /update 2

According to Nepal’s Ministry of Home Affairs, at least 159 people have been killed by flooding and landslides caused by monsoon rains during the month of July. Another 24 people remain missing and 55 have been injured as of July 28. Recent rains continue to cause landslides, blocking roadways and isolating villages in remote areas. On August 3, multiple landslides in the Sindhupalchok district blocked sections of the Araniko Highway and prevented access to some areas.

Flooding and landslides are common in Nepal during the monsoon season, which typically spans from June until August.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for lingering traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rain.
