Maratha group to stage demonstrations in Mumbai and rest of Maharashtra state on August 9; avoid all protests

Members of the Maratha Kranti Morcha (MKM) organization will hold demonstrations throughout Maharashtra state on Thursday, August 9. As part of this wave of protests, a "mega rally" is expected to take place in the capital city of Mumbai. A heightened security presence and associated transportation disruptions are to be anticipated in the vicinity of any gatherings. Clashes between security forces and protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

Maratha organizations are protesting to gain a reserved quota of jobs and education spots for members of their community. They are also demanding action be taken against police officers involved in clashes during a July 25 protest, charges be dropped against demonstrators arrested on July 25, and the resignation of certain politicians.
