Austria: Flooding and mudslides in Tyrol August 1

Flooding and mudslides in Tyrol August 1; expect local transportation disruptions; additional flooding possible

Warning

Event

Heavy rain and hail caused flash flooding and mudslides in Landeck district of Tyrol on Wednesday, August 1. Additional flooding occurred near the Rosanna River when tree trunks and debris from the Schanne Gorge blocked the river flow. Emergency personnel have since cleared the river and relief efforts are currently underway to assist local residents, as of Friday, August 3. No serious injuries have been reported as a result of the flooding, although material and infrastructural damages occurred. Residual road closures and disruptions to the light rail system are expected.  Scattered rain is forecast through August 8; further flooding is possible.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for associated transportation disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
