Nepal: Violence during July 21 protests calling for healthcare reform

On Saturday, July 21, dozens of protesters were reportedly injured in Kathmandu when police responded to a large demonstration in support of Dr. Kovinda KC, who began a hunger strike nearly a month ago to call for reforms to the healthcare sector. The violence reportedly broke out when members of Nepal Tarun Dal, the youth wing of the Nepali Congress opposition party, attempted to gain access to a restricted area near the parliament building, prompting police to use tear gas and batons to disperse the crowd. Protest rallies and hunger strikes were reported in Kathmandu as well as in Jajarkot district on Sunday, July 22, to denounce the police's violent response to the protests of the previous day. Further demonstrations are likely in the coming days and weeks, which may be accompanied by increased security measures and transportation disruptions.
