Lebanon: Heavy rain causes flooding in Ras Baalbek June 13-14

Heavy rain causes flooding in Ras Baalbek (Baalbek-Hermel province) June 13-14; village-wide power outage reported

Warning

Event

Heavy rain fell in Ras Baalbek (Baalbek-Hermel province), in the northern Beqaa Valley, on Wednesday, June 13, and Thursday, June 14, causing major flooding in the village and leaving at least one person dead. The flooding reportedly inundated roads, prompting traffic disruptions, caused a village-wide power outage, and destroyed several buildings. Further related disruptions are possible in the coming days as recovery efforts continue.

Advice

Individuals in the Beqaa Valley, particularly in Ras Baalbek, are advised to monitor local weather reports, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for associated traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities (e.g. evacuation orders). Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
