Pakistan: Deadly rain amid intense heat in Lahore June 5

Three killed and dozens injured in dust storm and heavy rains in Lahore June 5

Warning

Event

Dust storm followed by heavy rains struck the city of Lahore on the night of Tuesday, June 5. The adverse weather caused flash flooding, uprooted trees, and related road accidents in Lahore and its suburbs, as well as a building collapse near Dosaku Chowk Grand Place Marriage Hall. At least three people were killed and dozens others injured in total. Localized power outages were reported in the following areas: Allama Iqbal Road, Davis Road, Dharampur, Garhi Shahu, Harbanspura, and Sahafi Colony.

The heavy rain came amid a period of intense heat, expected to continue into the coming days, with temperatures as high as 44°C (111°F) forecast until at least June 13.

Advice

Individuals in Lahore are advised to monitor developments to weather forecasts as monsoon season approaches. In the event of further flooding, remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.

Due to the intense heat, stay well hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters [6 cups] of water per day; avoid drinking in public during Ramadan) and avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from 12:00 to 16:00). Be alert for symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke (high fever, hot, red, dry skin, headache, nausea, drowsiness, intense thirst, confusion, convulsions, and loss of consciousness), notably in vulnerable individuals such as young children and seniors. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
