Pakistan: Heightened security for Youm-e-Ali June 6

An annual observance of Youm-e-Ali, which mark the 21st day of Ramadan, will take place on Wednesday, June 6. The Pakistani government has implemented a heightened security presence throughout the country. In Karachi, over 5500 additional police officers have been deployed to provide security throughout the city. A large procession is scheduled to take place in Karachi from 13:00 to 21:00 (local time) between Nishter Park and Hussainia Iranian Kharadar, passing by Shah-e-Khurasan, Empress Market, Tibet Center, Kharadar, and Bolton Market. Similar processions are expected in cities throughout Pakistan, including in Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Sukkur. Heightened security measures (including road closures and security checkpoints) and localized traffic disruptions are expected around any gatherings.

Annual Youm-e-Ali observances take place on the 21st day of Ramadan to commemorate the martyrdom of imam Ali. This is a significant event for Shi'a Muslims and Youm-e-Ali celebrations have been targeted by terrorists in the past.
