Brazil: Civil groups call for nationwide protests May 30 /update 7

The Frente Brasil Popular (Popular Brazil Front) and Povo Sem Medo (People Without Fear) civil groups have called for a nationwide day of protests on Wednesday, May 30, to demand a reduction in the price of fuel, the resignation of Petrobras President Pedro Parente, and the holding of new, free elections. The Federação Única dos Petroleiros (Federation of Petroleum Workers) has also announced that their members will stage a 72-hour strike starting at midnight on May 30 (local time) in solidarity with the ongoing nationwide truck drivers' strike. Associated demonstrations, clashes between protesters and police, continuing fuel shortages, and road and air transportation disruptions (i.e. due to roadblocks and fuel shortages) are expected across Brazil in the coming days.

Context

The ongoing truck drivers' strike was called to pressure the government and the national energy company Petrobras to take measures to reduce fuel prices. Diesel prices in the country have reportedly nearly doubled since 2016.
