Burkina Faso: Civil servant strike May 28-June 1 in Ouagadougou /update 1
Civil servants at the Ministry of Economy in Ouagadougou continue strike May 28-June 1; associated demonstrations possible
Event
Civil servants at the Ministry of Economy in the capital Ouagadougou launched a series of daily sit-ins and strikes on Monday, May 28, expected to continue through Friday, June 1. Associated protests are possible elsewhere in the capital. An increased security presence and localized transportation disruptions are to be expected in the vicinity of any gatherings.
The strike has been organized to denounce “abusive” sanctions levied against two civil servants who were dismissed on May 23 amid a 120-hour strike that took place May 21-25 to demand better working conditions and to protest recent government reforms.
Advice
Individuals in Ouagadougou are advised to avoid the Ministry of Economy building and all associated protests, as even peaceful demonstrations can turn violent with little notice.
