As of Tuesday, May 22, the states of Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, and Haryana are in the midst of a heatwave. Temperatures over 40°C (104°F) have been recorded. The heatwave is currently expected to continue through at least May 24. Localized power outages are possible.

Advice

Individuals in affected areas are advised to stay well-hydrated (drink at least 1.5 liters [3 pints] of water per day and avoid alcohol) and to avoid spending time in direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day (generally from noon to 16:00). Wear light, loose-fitting clothing in light colors that cover as much skin as possible. Wear a hat and apply sunscreen regularly. Be especially on guard against symptoms of dehydration or heat stroke in young children and seniors, as they are particularly vulnerable. Do not hesitate to contact emergency services if necessary.
