Myanmar: Rail disruptions in Kachin state (north) May 17

Landmine explosion leads to rail disruptions in Kachin state May 17

Warning

Event

The Mandalay- Myitkyina rail line in Kachin state (north) remains heavily disrupted as of Thursday, May 17, following the explosions of two landmines along the line on May 15. The explosions occurred between Mayan and Namti stations and between Moe Kaung and Htou Pu stations shortly before midnight. No injuries were reported; however, the tracks were severely damaged and are now closed. It is unclear when they will reopen.

Replacement buses are operating between affected stations. However, as the lines are usually busy, the shuttles could be insufficient.

Context

The Mandalay-Myitkyina route is Myanmar's second busiest rail line.

Landmines present in Kachin state are usually linked to clashes between the military and the Kachin Independence Army (KIA), one of the country's largest rebel groups.

Advice

As a reminder, some Western governments advise against nonessential travel to Kachin state (with the exception of the towns of Myitkyina, Bhamo, and Putao) due to the risk of armed conflict.
