Bosnia and Herzegovina: State of natural disaster in Usora due to floods May 6

Officials declare state of natural disaster due to floods in Usora municipality May 6; associated traffic disruptions expected in the coming days

Warning

Event

Officials declared a state of natural disaster in Usora municipality on Sunday, May 6, after two days of rain led to flooding in the area. Heavy rain caused streams and rivers to overflow, suspending road traffic on at least ten local roads and flooding 30 houses. According to local reports, several bridges have collapsed over the Usora River. As of Monday, May 7, no casualties or major injuries have been reported. It is unclear when the state of natural disaster will be lifted. The forecast for the upcoming week shows only a small chance of rain, making further flooding unlikely. Lingering traffic disruptions are expected in affected areas in the coming days.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rain.
