Pakistan: At least 23 killed in Balochistan coal mine explosions May 5-6

Event

Explosions were reported at two neighboring coal mines in Marwaarh and Spin Karez (Balochistan province) overnight from Saturday, May 5, to Sunday, May 6 (local time), leaving at least 23 people dead and 11 others injured. The first blast occurred shortly before midnight on May 5 at the coal mine in Marwaarh, while the second explosion was recorded three hours later at the Spin Karez mine on May 6.

Context

Mine accidents are relatively common in Pakistan. On March 2011, 45 miners died in a similar explosion in Balochistan province.

Balochistan province, located in north-central Pakistan, has been plagued by violence in recent years, due in large part to its placement along a prominent arms smuggling route.
