Nepal: Flooding in Bajhang district causes traffic disruptions May 7

Heavy rains cause severe flooding in Bajhang district May 5; storm debris still obstructing Jay Prithvi Highway as of May 7

Warning

Event

Heavy rains on Saturday, May 5, caused significant flooding across Bajhang district. According to local sources, five people were killed and at least two houses were swept away by the floodwaters. Officials say the floods have affected more than 1200 farmers in Chhabispathivera and Durgathali rural municipalities. As of Monday, May 7, traffic remains blocked on the Jay Prithvi Highway as debris left behind by flooding in the Sudikhola and Mauribagar areas continues to obstruct the roadway. Further rains have been forecast from Tuesday, May 8, to Thursday, May 10.

Advice

Individuals present in affected areas are advised to keep abreast of the situation, avoid areas directly hit by flooding, prepare for lingering traffic disruptions, and adhere to any orders issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded. Be aware that the risk of contracting water- and mosquito-borne diseases tends to rise after periods of heavy rain.
