Tunisia: Municipal elections May 6 /update 1

Municipal elections in Tunisia to take place May 6; increased security measures expected

Warning

Event

Municipal elections in Tunisia are set to take place on Sunday, May 6. Increased security measures - including a heightened police presence - are expected in large cities and near polling stations. Preliminary election results are expected on Monday, May 7, with confirmed official results to be released by Wednesday, May 9.

Context

In 2011 Tunisia's municipal councils were dissolved and replaced by provisional "special delegations." Municipal elections to replace the special delegations were originally scheduled for October 30, 2016, but were postponed several times, due in part to disputes over the composition of the country's electoral commission.

Advice

Individuals in Tunisia are advised to keep abreast of the situation and avoid all protests as a precaution, as well as polling stations on election day.
