Tanzania: Authorities warn of unsafe road conditions

Parliament warns of unsafe road conditions after at least 38 people die in two road accidents between on March 24 and April 4; exercise caution

In late March, the Parliamentary Infrastructure Committee warned of unsafe conditions on the country's road network. In recent weeks, at least 38 people were killed in two deadly road accidents. On March 24 a truck and a passenger bus collided near Mkuranga, killing 26 people and injuring nine more. At least 12 people were killed and 46 more injured on April 4 when another truck crashed into passenger bus traveling in Igunga district (Tabora province).

Context

According to government estimates, around 9000 people die every year in road accidents in Tanzania.

Advice

Driving in Tanzania can be dangerous, especially in rural areas. Road travel outside major cities is not recommended, especially at night. In addition, individuals present in Tanzania are advised to seek local advice if in doubt about the safety of a transport provider.
