Yemen: Islamic State claims responsibility for March 4 Aden shooting
Drive-by shooting in Aden kills two security officers March 4, with Islamic State (IS) group claiming responsibility; unidentified assailants kill deputy security chief in Aden March 5
Event
On Sunday, March 4, suspected militants carried out a drive-by shooting attack that killed two security force personnel members in the Mansourah neighborhood of Aden. The Islamic State (IS) group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Additionally, unidentified assailants shot and killed Abdul Karim Abdullah, the deputy security chief of the 7th security zone, in a restaurant in Aden on Monday, March 5; no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Additional IS attacks on security personnel and installations are possible in Aden in the coming days and weeks.
Context
The port city of Aden - the seat of the internationally recognized government currently at war with Houthi rebels - is a frequent target of IS militant attacks. Notably, on February 24, a pair of vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attacks in Aden killed at least 14 people and wounded 54 others.
Advice
The security environment in Yemen remains complex. Due to poor security conditions, many Western governments strongly advise their citizens against all travel to Yemen. Travel to the country should only be considered with proper security protocols in place. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
