Informational

Event

Two police officers were killed by a roadside bomb in the municipality of Caldono (Cauca department; southwestern Colombia) on the morning of Saturday, March 3. No group has claimed the responsibility for the attack, which occurred in a region where various armed factions are present, including ex-FARC dissidents.

Context

A peace deal between the FARC guerilla group and the Colombian government was ratified by the congress in November 2016, officially ending an armed conflict that killed more than 260,000 people over five decades. However, an estimated 1100 dissident ex-FARC militants remain active.

Advice

Due to the presence of a number of armed groups, some Western governments advise against travel to various regions of the country, including parts of Cauca.
