US Embassy in Ankara closed due to security concerns March 5; Turkish authorities arrest 12 suspected Islamic State members

The US Embassy in the capital Ankara is closed on Monday, March 5, due to security concerns. Only emergency services will be provided. The embassy has also advised US nationals to avoid large crowds and remain vigilant in popular tourist sites. It is unclear when the embassy will reopen.

Furthermore, on Monday Turkish authorities announced the arrests of 12 suspected Islamic State (IS) members, with eight additional suspects being pursued. According to state-run news, the suspects were foreign nationals attempting to recruit new members and the operation was "planned previously."

Increased security in Ankara is to be expected.
