A polar vortex snowstorm - nicknamed "the Beast from the East" - hit Ireland on Tuesday, February 27, bringing between 5 and 10 cm (2 to 4 in) of snow across the country as of Wednesday, February 28. The snowfall is forecast to continue through Thursday with accumulations up to 25 cm (10 in). The storm has prompted Met Eireann to issue red weather alerts (the highest level) for snow and ice for areas including Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Wicklow, and Meath.
Significant air, rail, and road transportation disruptions due to the snowstorm and freezing temperatures have been reported and are expected to continue. Dublin International Airport (DUB) and Aerlingus (Ireland's national airline) are reporting significant flight delays and cancelations as of Wednesday. Power outages and phone service disruptions are also possible.
