Afghanistan: Peace conference to be held in Kabul Feb. 28

Kabul Peace conference to be held in the capital on February 28; expect heightened security across city

Warning

Event

The latest Kabul Peace conference will be held in Kabul City on Wednesday, February 28. Ambassadors from a range of nations associated with the security and stability of Afghanistan will be in attendance. The event will be considered a high value target for militants, with a heightened threat from indirect fire and large-scale suicide vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (SVBIEDs). Increased security systems and disruption to travel associated with VIP movements are expected across the city from February 27 until March 2. Individuals in Kabul should consider essential movement only.

Advice

Due to the heightened security threat, individuals present in Kabul advised to remain vigilant, closely monitor the security situation, and obey all instructions issued by the local authorities or their home governments. Consider essential movement only during the affected period.

Many Western governments advise their citizens against travel to Afghanistan due to the high threat of kidnapping and terrorism, including frequent attacks against Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, local civilians and politicians, and individuals working in the humanitarian and reconstruction fields. Travel to the country should only be undertaken with proper security protocols in place.
