Death toll from February 23 Al-Shabaab attacks in Mogadishu rises to 45 people as of February 24

Warning

Event

The death toll from dual vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attacks and subsequent gunfire that took place in Mogadishu on February 23 - previously reported to have killed 18 people - has risen to 45 people killed as of Saturday, February 24. According to government officials, some 36 others were wounded in the Al-Shabaab-claimed attacks, which took place near the Villa Somalia (Presidential Palace) and the recently opened Doorbin Hotel. Additional Al-Shabaab militant attacks are possible in Mogadishu in the coming weeks.

Context

The first VBIED exploded near the Doorbin Hotel, located in central Mogadishu, at approximately 18:25 (local time). Militants detonated the second VBIED near the Villa Somalia around 18:40 before attempting to storm the building.

Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent in the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Advice

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to monitor developments to the situation, remain vigilant for potential militant activity, and adhere to instructions issued by the local authorities and their home governments.

Due to the high threat of terrorism, individuals present throughout Somalia are advised to avoid government and institutional buildings as well as political events due to Al-Shabaab's tendency to target political figures and security forces. Because of extremely poor security conditions, travel should only be considered with appropriate security precautions in place.
