Somalia: At least 18 killed in double attacks in Mogadishu Feb. 23 /update 1

Medical sources report that at least 18 people were killed in a double vehicle-borne IED attack in Mogadishu on February 23; Al-Shabaab claims responsibility

Warning

Event

Hospital officials reported that at least 18 people were killed and 20 wounded in a double vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) attack in Mogadishu on the evening (local time) of Friday, February 23. Security sources said that five Al-Shabaab militants were killed while attempting to storm the Villa Somalia (Presidential Palace). Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attacks through their media outlet, stating that the one of the main targets was the recently opened Doorbin Hotel. Details are still emerging.

Context

The first VBIED exploded near the Doorbin Hotel, located in central Mogadishu, at approximately 18:25 (local time). Militants detonated the second VBIED near the Villa Somalia around 18:40 before attempting to storm the building.

Al-Shabaab continues to control large zones in the south and center of Somalia and attacks from the group are frequent in the country, including in Mogadishu. The group often targets government officials and military infrastructure in a bid to topple the Western- and UN-backed government and impose its own strict interpretation of Islam in Somalia.

Advice

Individuals in Mogadishu are advised to remain abreast of the situation and avoid the area of the attacks.

Due to the high threat of terrorism, individuals present throughout Somalia are advised to avoid government and institutional buildings as well as political events due to Al-Shabaab's tendency to target political figures and security forces. Because of extremely poor security conditions, travel should only be considered with appropriate security precautions in place.
