A terror motive has been ruled out for a grenade attack on the US Embassy in Podgorica that took place early on Thursday, February 22, (local time). According to Montenegrin authorities, the assailant - a former soldier who fought against NATO forces in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia in 1999 - threw a grenade into the US Embassy courtyard before killing himself in a second grenade detonation. No additional casualties or significant damages resulted from the blasts. The motive for the attack remains unclear.

The situation is reportedly under control, and police officers had continued to carry out an associated investigation in the area as of Thursday afternoon; roads adjacent to the US Embassy and consular entrances remain closed due to the ongoing investigation. A heightened security presence had been implemented near diplomatic compounds throughout Montenegro following the attack, according to police. The US Embassy was closed on Thursday following the attack, and is expected to reopen on Friday, February 23.
