Bulgaria: Demonstrations to take place in Sofia Feb. 15 and 17

Far-right "Lukov March" and counter-rallies to take place in Sofia on February 15 and 17; avoid all protests

The annual far-right "Lukov March" is set to take place in Sofia on Saturday, February 18. Demonstrators are expected to rally at 17:30 (local time) in front of the Cathedral Church Sveta Nedelya, before marching to the Monument of the Unknown Soldier.

According to local sources, a counter-rally will take place on Thursday, February 15, in front of Sofia University. A "No to Nazis on our Streets" counter-rally has also been scheduled for February 18, at 12:00. Counter-protesters are expected to rally in front of the Sofia History Museum, before marching to the European Commission building and the Sofia town hall.

Heightened security measures and transportation disruptions are anticipated along the march routes. Confrontations between demonstrators and counter-protesters cannot be ruled out.

Context

The annual "Lukov March" held in Sofia since 2003, has faced significant opposition over the past few years. The marches are held in honor of a general who was the war minister of the pro-Nazi Union of Bulgarian Legions from 1932 until 1938.
