Madagascar: Heavy rains likely to cause floods Feb. 5-18

Event

According to Malagasy weather officials, heavy rains of up to 200mm (7.8 in) are expected from Monday, February 5, to Sunday, February 11, in the regions of Melaky, Haute Matsiatra, Menabe, Analanjirofo, and Vatovavy-Fitovinany. In addition, weather forecasts indicate that heavy rains of up to 150 mm (5.9 in) could continue into the week of Monday, February 12, especially in the regions of Bongolava, Analamanga, Diana, Sofia, Itasy, and Alaotra-Mangoro. Potential flooding is feared in river-adjacent areas. Associated transportation disruptions and power outages are possible.

Context

Flooding is common in Madagascar, particularly during the rainy season (November to April), and can result in significant transportation disruptions, structural damage, and loss of life. Hurricane Ava struck eastern Madagascar in early January 2018, leading to significant flooding in Antananarivo and in the town of Toamasina (Atsinanana region). In total, 136,005 persons were affected, 22,000 were displaced, and at least 36 people were killed.

Remember that driving or walking through running water can be dangerous - 15 cm (6 in) of running water is enough to knock over an adult - and that floodwater may contain wastewater or chemical products; all items having come into contact with the water should be disinfected and all foodstuffs discarded.
