Libya: Some 378,000 children need humanitarian aid

UN Children’s Fund reports that around 378,000 children in Libya need life-saving humanitarian aid in 2018

Informational

Event

International aid organizations are reporting that some 378,000 children in Libya are in need of life-saving humanitarian aid in 2018. Additionally, according to the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF), the seven years of armed conflict that have ravaged the country since the 2011 Arab Spring uprising have left roughly 170,000 people displaced - 54 percent of whom are children. The humanitarian situation in Libya is expected to further deteriorate as the civil war continues in the coming months.

Context

Libya has been divided into rival governments and factions with their own militias and political parties since the 2011 uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi. The security situation in Libya remains precarious and there is little to no sign of a return of relative stability in the near term.

Advice

The security environment in Libya remains complex. Although travel is possible in some areas (with appropriate security protocols in place), other areas should be considered strictly off-limits. Professional security advice and support should be sought prior to travel.
