Hurricane Ava kills at least 29 people and displaces over 13,000 in Madagascar as of January 8; flooding, landslides, and consequent transportation disruptions reported

Hurricane Ava struck eastern Madagascar January 5-6, hitting the eastern coast of the island with wind speeds of up to 190 km/h (120 mph). According to the Malagasy National Office for Risk and Disaster Management (BNGRC), at least 29 people have been killed and some 13,000 others displaced. More than 16,000 students have had classes suspended until January 11 due to the continued risk of flooding and landslides. The worst flooding so far has been reported in the slums of Antananarivo and in the town of Toamasina (Atsinanana region); flooding and landslides also obstructed parts of National Highway Two. Related transportation disruptions are expected to persist in the coming days.
