Greece: Various transportation strikes January 12-15 /update 1

Subway and trolleybus strike in Athens January 12; national ferry strike January 12; air traffic controller strike January 15

Warning

Event

Subway and trolleybus workers in Athens will hold a 24-hour strike on Friday, January 12. There will reportedly be no service on any of the capital’s subway or trolleybus lines throughout the day. Increased road congestion and demand for other modes of transportation (e.g. taxis) should be anticipated.

Additionally, ferry workers will be on strike nationwide on Friday, which will likely result in the cancelation of all services.

Finally, Greek air traffic controllers are expected to hold a three-hour strike on Monday, January 15, between noon and 15:00 (local time), although this has not yet been confirmed by EuroControl. If it goes ahead, significant flight delays are to be anticipated, along with potential cancelations.

Advice

Individuals in Greece are advised to confirm travel reservations and allow for extra time to reach their destinations.
