Tens of thousands of mourners are expected to travel to the holy city of Touba (165 km [100 mi] east of Dakar) over the coming days following the death of an influential Muslim leader on the night of January 9-10. Business across Senegal have been closed as a mark of respect for the late Serigne Sidy Mokhtar Mbacke and it is unclear when normal operations will resume. President Macky Sall has canceled his weekly government meeting to visit the tomb in Touba. Large crowds in Touba are expected to cause disruptions in the city over the coming days and weeks.

Mbacke was the head of the Sufi Mouride sect, which plays a key role in politics and business in the country.
